Bills, bills, and more bills. We all wanted to grow up and do grown-up things until we learned that grown-up things include pesky payments and invoices. Paying them is one thing; keeping track of them is a completely different feat. Luckily, the digital frontier has made it easier as apps like Prism keep us (and our grow-up tasks) in mind. In short, Prism helps you stay on top of your bills by consolidating them all into one secure location. There is obviously more to it, so let’s get started.

App Intro

Prism is a free finance app that helps you keep control of your money. Prism came about in 2011, and in 2018, a company called BillGO Inc. acquired it. BillGO Inc.believes everyone deserves access to a payments system that makes your tomorrow better than today.” The overall goal of the Prism app is to help the user simplify how they manage and pay their monthly bills.

The App

Cost Rating: 9/10

This is one of the best features of the Prism app. Minus some potential fees that they are very upfront about, it comes at no cost to you, the user. With their Prism Payment Promise, the organization will eat any late fees that occur due to late payments on your bill when paying with Prism. So, there is no risk for you on that end. With their relationships with billers, you also do not need to worry about your data being sold for them to make money – another huge plus for this app and company.

User Experience Rating: 4/10

Now, this is where the app takes a major hit. Most banks and banking apps have budget management and expense tracking features already available. This includes knowing where your bills are coming from and where your money is going. All of this, coupled with automatic payments that most companies already offer, kind of makes Prism redundant and just another app you have to manage. It does have a smooth interface, but there is trouble when it comes to syncing banking information with certain billers, especially those local ones who may not show up in Prism’s database.

Tools & Features Rating: 7/10

So much money gets wasted from being nickeled and dimed with small bills that, on their own, aren’t much, but when compounded, they can put a dent in your bank. One of the best ways to realize this is to see them. To use Prism, users have to individually put in each bill, which provides an active role in knowing where your money is going and seeing the numbers immediately reflected. At the end of putting in all of your bills, you may find some places where you can save money.

Setup Rating: 7/10

This kind of goes along with the “Tools & Features” section, but setting up may seem a bit laborious. However, let’s be honest, your finances are an important part of life, and simply taking the time to set up your Prism profile could make a huge difference. For the big retailers and billers, setup is pretty seamless when syncing your bills to your Prism account. Although, for the smaller, local payments – like power, gas, HOAs, etc. – you may have to manually input those, and you may not have the feature to pay through the Prism portal. Other than that, it truly is not that difficult to set up. Also, if you want to pay your bills with your PayPal or Stripe account, instead of your bank, this is a strong feature of Prism, being able to link other payment processors for bill payment.

The Bottom Line

There are numerous budgeting and bill payment apps available, not to mention most banks are already creating portals within their infrastructure to help aid this headache we all feel. However, Prism is not the worst option for your Apple or Android device. Again, there is some serious potential here, and a lot of the issues seem to be with the acquisition and growing pains when they became a part of BillGO. Take this all with a grain of salt, though. Downloading and fiddling with it yourself is the only way to know if Prism works for you.
